More Details
Spoken Word Artists are trained well in how to capture the essence of trauma, injustice, tragedy, etc., and then unapologetically reenact very harsh realities through masterfully delivered live performance. This skill set is valid, very powerful, can be therapeutic, and can even save lives. Here at The Ham Slam we 100% respect and appreciate the art of spoken word, but is a virtual showcase of trauma really what we want to log into right now?
What if in this year of uncertainty, we took the recognizable poetry slam platform and mandated that it be used to draw us together with comedy, laughter, and uplifting words so the black community can have a few guaranteed moments of joy during the already polarizing holiday season?
The HAM Slam is a virtual spoken word poetry competition established to help Black and BIPOC artists in the United States generate revenue while creating and sharing new work that is uplifting, funny, and provides a creative escape; with the overall goal of invigorating our Black and BIPOC community.
The event title is a play on both the slang term ham; a silly, playful, and/or exaggerated performer; as well as the urban acronym HAM (Hard As a Mother*******)
